The first ever Yorkshire and Humberside regional Civic Societies Week was launched in the Digital Media Centre in Barnsley on the 12th June. The aim of the week was to
hold events to raise the profile of the civic society movement across the region and celebrate the important work that societies do in providing a community voice on development and regeneration matters.
Over 30 societies from across Yorkshire and Humber took part in the week long event (from Saturday 21st June through to Sunday 29th June) by hosting their own activities.
Barnsley Civic Trust held a Big Debate on Transportation in the town centre.
Speaker Bob Grundy (from the North East, pictured) entertained with an inspiring speech about the importance of quality in the built environment. Other speakers were the Mayor Cllr Ken Sanderson, and Peter Spawforth who donated a magnificent turned wooden vase to be awarded annually.
