Winners announced in Barnsley Civic Trust top Shop Awards

The winners of the Barnsley Civic Trust Shop Awards 07 were announced at a reception in the Town Hall hosted by the Mayor, Councillor Len Picken on Wednesday, October 3, 2007.

A record-breaking 81 town centre shops and businesses entered The Shop Awards 07, launched by Barnsley Civic Trust with Barnsley in Bloom.

The Mayor praised the organisers: “The Barnsley Civic Trust, with the support of the Barnsley in Bloom team and with sponsorship from Barnsley Property and Living Magazine have for the first time successfully encouraged local businesses to join the ethos of a “Better Barnsley” by running the town centre business awards.”

The winners of the seven categories – Small Shops, Women’s Fashion, Men’s Fashion, Travel Agents, Cafes/Takeaways, Charity Shops, Public Houses  - each won a Barnsley Civic Trust trophy which they can display to customers to recognise their achievement. The “highly commended” businesses received a certificate.

Winner Barry Keegan, owner of Keegan Sports on Doncaster Road, said: “It’s a shock to win, but I’m really pleased because there is a question hanging over the future of the shop as our part of Doncaster Road is up for redevelopment”.

“It was very hard to choose the winners in the end as the standard of entries was so high,” said Phyllis Barnes, Barnsley Civic Trust treasurer and co-organiser of the project with fellow Barnsley Civic Trust executive committee member Cath Wilkinson.

“It proves that Barnsley has many shops to be proud of, and it proves that town centre businesses are raising their game. We hope that the Awards will help to show people what Barnsley has to offer, and encourage them to use their town centre.”

The organisers plan to expand the categories next year to include: Large Shops, the Market and Beauty Salons/Hairdressers.
